To take the off the cover to get at the timing
mark some might try to use a screwdriver. Dont
to that use a flat washer that will fit into
the slot (Fender washer) and turn it with plyers
screwdriver or vicegrip. Wont bugger it up
as a screwdriver. Wider surface. Learned this one
the hard way. If the valves are still noisy
after setting it might be bad cam followers.
This can get pricey if the head is bad. My
Savage sitting here waiting for a used but
good head to show up as lack of oil had wore
out the cam, followers, and bearing surface of
